A competition by invitation called for a single family house in a non descriptive brick building part of a former manufacturing area in the west village.
The exterior skin of the building was left untouched, while the interior was removed, creating an entry loggia, a car port and a garden. The last one, raised 5 feet from the street level, had one side excavated as a pool, with portholes giving light to the artist studio directly below.
The residence has a glass clad double height ground floor while the upper floors, which are higher than the existing building, are shielded from the neighbors by an exterior structural structure in pre rusted steel. The back façade opens to the view of a secular oak tree growing in the adjoining brownstones’ back gardens.
